Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park: Tours, Tips and Getting There

Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park protects a group of limestone caves west of Qualicum Beach, about 40 minutes from Beach Acres in Parksville. Most of the caves are explored on guided tours that run throughout the year, and BC Parks lists two small caves that visitors can explore on their own. It makes a good plan for a rainy day on the Island!

What to Do at Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park

The caves hold crystal formations and ancient fossils, and the surrounding karst landscape has disappearing streams and banded rock outcrops you can see from the trails. Wet caves and the deeper sections need an experienced guide.

For those who prefer to stay above ground, there's plenty to do as well. The Phil Whitfield Interpretive Trail is a 950-metre loop from the visitor centre, and a short trail crosses a suspension bridge over the Big Qualicum River and climbs to the cave entrances. The day-use area has a shallow spot for wading, and rock climbing and rappelling are offered through the Horne Lake caving centre.

Camping, fishing and paddling on Horne Lake itself are at Horne Lake Regional Park, about 900 metres away, so you can easily make a full day of it.

When to Visit Horne Lake Caves

Guided tours run year-round. In summer, BC Parks says tours leave every hour from 9 am to 5 pm, and the visitor centre and cave theatre are open. Outside summer the schedule is lighter and some tours run on set days only, so check the Horne Lake Caves website before you drive out.

Tours go ahead whatever the weather, but the caves are driest in summer and fall, and Horne Lake Caves asks visitors to call ahead for guided tours in winter and spring. Between January and March, snow on Horne Lake Road can occasionally postpone tours until the road is plowed. The two vertical tours run from June to September only.

What to Wear and Bring

The caves stay around 8°C all year, so dress in warm layers even in summer and skip cotton, which stays wet. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, since the cave floors are uneven and slippery, and leave a dry change of clothes in the car for the drive home. Everyone cleans their shoes at a station before going into the caves, to help stop the spread of White-Nose Syndrome, a fungal disease that kills bats, and caving gear that has been used in caves off Vancouver Island isn't allowed.

The trails and caves aren't wheelchair accessible, and dogs aren't allowed in the caves, though leashed pets are welcome elsewhere in the park.

Getting to Horne Lake Caves from Parksville

The park is 26 km west of Qualicum Beach. From Parksville, head north on Highway 19, take the Horne Lake exit and follow the signs for about 12 km to Horne Lake. That last stretch is Horne Lake Road, a gravel road shared with logging trucks that can get potholed after rain, so take it slowly. Give yourself about 40 minutes from Beach Acres.

The caves make an easy pairing with other mid-Island stops. Our guide to things to do in Qualicum Beach covers what's on the way, and our post on fall day trips from Parksville includes Horne Lake alongside other nearby parks.
